If you’ve been paying close attention to the news over the last few months, you’ll know that veganism is riding a wave of popularity at the moment, with a plant-based cruelty-free lifestyle now becoming increasingly of interest to consumers… whether they’re looking to buy food, eat out at restaurants or shop for new cosmetics.
And brands are certainly jumping on this particular bandwagon with glee, it would seem. According to Metro, for example, luxury beauty brand Hourglass Cosmetics has just pledged to be completely plant-based come the year 2020.
CEO Carisa James was quoted as saying: “Luxury is a combination of innovation and integrity. Our values have always been exemplified in our commitment to creating cruelty-free products. If we are truly committed to being 100 per cent cruelty-free, we shouldn’t have animal-derived ingredients in our products.”
Superdrug, meanwhile, launched an exclusive vegan makeup and skincare line this year, and vegan tattooist Kat Von D also brought out an entire range of cruelty-free and vegan makeup and makeup brushes. And over in Australia, a bill was proposed in June to ban cosmetic testing on animals from July next year.
But back in June this year, NARS was boycotted by consumers after announcing that it was no longer a cruelty-free makeup brand. The company apparently backtracked on its position in this regard so it could enter the Chinese market (where animal testing is mandatory for cosmetics) – a move that upset its loyal fan base.
So as you can see, it’s all about veganism where cosmetics are concerned at the moment… are you ready for this step change?
